Election 2020: Foreigners won’t vote with us – Pratt warns government

Managing editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has warned the Akufo-Addo government to stop giving foreigners preferential treatment or face the consequences in 2020.

He noted that the government should remember that those foreign countries, entities and individuals will not be part of voters during the 2020 general elections.

“On December 7 2020 when we line up to vote for the next government, the IMF will not be in the queue. They should remember that Donald Trump will not be in the queue to elect the next Ghanaian government…it is Ghanaians like you and I who will be in the queue to choose our next government… so they should look sharp and reason up”

Mr Pratt was speaking at a vigil organised by the NDC to speak against the National Communication Authority’s shut down of some pro-NDC radio stations.

According to him, contrary to the promise of promoting indigenisation, the government is transferring the ‘reins of power in business, in media and so on to foreigners,” a move that does not augur well for the country.

“Ghanaian radio stations are being shut down because they cannot pay for the frequency and yet U.S soldiers are being given the same frequency for free,” he stated.

He further cautioned that, “all those who tried to do it before saw how they ended and those who try to do it today will end up the same way. They will end up in the dustbin of history, they will be condemned as people who sought to prevent our forward movement, he stated”.

Background

Last Thursday, officials from the National Communication Authority (NCA) stormed the premises of Radio Gold and Radio XYZ with armed security personnel and ordered their immediate closure.

The shutdown is the latest move by the regulator to clamp down on radio stations operating without valid authorizations.

The action, according to the Authority, was an enforcement of the decision of the Electronic Communications Tribunal which includes closing down radio stations operating without valid authorisations.
