IGP acts in ‘Police beat police’ case

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) David Asante-Apeatu has ordered an immediate investigation into circumstances under which a group of police officers assaulted a colleague in the full glare of onlookers.

The IGP is said to have ordered the Central Regional Police Commander in whose jurisdiction the criminality took place to investigate the matter immediately.

Detective Inspector Frank Kpei of the District Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Winneba was allegedly assaulted by officers of the Rapid Deployment Force (RDF), who were returning from Winneba after performing duties at the Aboakyir festival in Winneba.

Upon reaching a point close to a taxi rank in Winneba, one of the RDF officers, a certain Inspector William Akakpo, decided to undertake a decongestion of a traffic jam but when the assaulted cop, who was then in a taxi advised against the manner in which he was doing it, the inspector took offence and descended upon him even though the victim identified himself as a police officer.

The other RDF officers were said to have joined in beating up the detective inspector after which they took him to the Winneba Police Station.

The superior officer, who was leading them, looked on, as the victim was pummeled.

ASP/Mr. Sarpor later claimed the victim obstructed Inspector Akakpo in the performance of his duties and showed insubordination to him.
