I turned down a call to serve on VGMA board, Asamoah-Baidoo

Entertainment journalist Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo who has served as a board member of 3Music Awards on three consecutive occasions, has disclosed he was contacted and offered an opportunity to serve as a board member of Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) but declined.

Mr. Asamoah-Baidoo, known for his ability to criticize constructively in his write-ups and submissions on entertainment talk shows, said he turned down the offer which was communicated to him two years ago by then Public Relations Officer of Charterhouse, George Quaye, because he was convinced the time was not right.

“George called me that the organisers have decided to include me on the board. Well, I felt at the time I wasn’t ready because I figured that over the years, there were a couple of people who were good critics of the award, starting from Nii Ayi Tagoe, Francis Doku and the likes. These guys were taken to the board so that really curtailed their ability to pass commentary on the award,” he said on Ghanaweb TV’s Bloggers’ Forum hosted by Abrantepa.

His comment is on the back of a campaign on social media to get him on the VGMA board as persons behind the #ArnoldforVGMAboard believes his exploits will go a long way to better the scheme.

Explaining why he accepted to be a board member of the 3Music Awards having turned down the VGMAs’, Asamoah-Baidoo said: “sometimes it’s not always prudent to sit at that side and be criticizing. It’s also advisable that if you have ideas, innovative mechanisms as to how something should work, you should help.”

He however mentioned that he will be a VGMA board member when the time is right.

“With regards to me being on the VGMA board, I can’t say ‘no’… when I get the call again, I’ll easily jump unto the bandwagon and help it grow,” he said, adding that as it stands, he is indecisive whether he would serve on both boards concurrently.

“I’ve not gotten to that bridge yet. For example, Andy Dosty is on 3Music Awards, he’s still on VGMAs. Although it’s the same objective, they have different mechanisms, different category definitions are how they go about their award schemes so I’m not too sure…”
