The NPP Gov’t has not committed to building any Chamber – Yaw Preko

The Deputy Communications Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Preko has made some observations concerning the proposed 450 parliament chamber blocks.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye, has unveiled the design of the New Parliamentary Chamber Block and the unveiling was done during a courtesy call paid by a delegation from the Architectural Firm – Adjaye & Associates.

But a statement reacting to the new chamber and copied to peacefmonline.com states that “The decision to build the New Parliamentary Chamber Block has been that of the Parliamentary Service Board which has representatives from both sides of the house.”

“As we speak the proposal has not been put before the entire house for deliberations and for subsequent approval or rejection”, the statement said. “It is very important to state that our checks with government suggests that, the NPP government has not committed to building any chamber for Parliament… it is purely a Parliamentary proposal.”

We have followed the issues and would like to make the following observations:

1. The decision to build the New Parliamentary Chamber Block has been that of the Parliamentary Service Board which has representatives from both sides of the house.

2. As we speak the proposal has not been put before the entire house for deliberations and for subsequent approval or rejection.

3. Members of the house are even yet to be formally briefed on the details of the project as to the source of funding and other important details.

4. It is very important to state that our checks with government suggests that, the NPP government has not committed to building any chamber for Parliament. It is purely a Parliamentary proposal.

5. It is not a project being embarked upon by the NPP Government (Executive).
