Reconstitute mining committee, remove party elements, Akufo-Addo told

Veteran Journalist, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako is urging President Akufo-Addo to revamp the Inter-Ministerial Committee constituted to oversee the fight against illegal mining.

Speaking on Newsfile, Saturday, he stated that people hindering the fight are within the committee and should be let go while others are put in their place.

According to him, officers who are willing to put their positions on the line to safeguard the country against these illegal practices, like the President, are the ones that deserve to make up the committee.

“I know he (President Akufo-Addo) doesn’t like reshuffling but you have to reshuffle some. It is an institutional representation but the persons there failed in a way,” Kweku Baako told Samson Lardy Anyenini, host of the show.

The Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide believes that reconstituting the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining is in the best interest of the country and a commitment to the fight against galamsey.

Kweku Baako added that the committee and/or its work should be devoid of political party interference. This he believes will successfully help to win the fight to protect the land and water resources.

“When you have a President who dedicates and commits himself to that campaign and yet he is hugely challenged in terms of implementation, I will say the party elements, ‘get them out quickly’.”

“If there is a continuous political party involvement in any campaign to fight galamsey, it is not going to work,” he added.

He admitted that the fight against galamsey may not be an easy one and although some progress has been made, more achievements can be chalked.
